Owen Maier-Sunshine by Pusha T ft. Jill Scott
Sunshine by Pusha T ft. Jill Scott is a song heavy on social commentary that is very similar to the songs we spoke about earlier in class. It speaks about white privilege vs. black oppression. The song has a spooky and a little optimistic hook by Jill Scott, where she talks a little fatigued about the length of the day. Pusha T, my favorite artist, then talks a lot about police and their problems, but how they are not at as much at fault. He references grandma’s prayers being overtaken by the sound of gunplay in the streets to say it’s really a lot of black people who are shooting each other and we need to stop this to stop the police problems. He then says that people are hung by the noose in the form of a police badge. Jill Scott sings the hook once more, then Push comes back again, talking more about privilege and how county kids get laptops but primarily black schools get metal detectors. Jill Scott comes in with a beautiful bridge about Baltimore is only a small spot in the big picture, and about how this is going on everywhere. This highlights many of the problems in today’s culture. While this is not my favorite song by Pusha T, it’s very affecting and conscious.
I have never heard this song, but after listening to it I strongly agreed with you analysis.
