Hip Hop History - Raina Kuzemka

  • Dj Herc can be considered one of the first hip hop artists
    • invented the merry go round which I like because my favorite part of a lot of songs is the beat which just makes me in a good mood
  • Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five- The Message I connected with a because when I heard the line "Don't push me cause I am close to the edge" i thought of the movie happy feet which used to be one of my favorite movies as a kid, and I always liked that line because so many times I feel like if one more person pushed my buttons I would tumble over the edge.
  • I like Ice-T a lot, the beats in the background just put me in a good mood
  • In Ain't no Joke by Eric B. & Rakim the line "addicted to music" really stood out to me because it shows that not only do the artists do music to get theirselves out of the neighborhoods, but they do it because they love doing it. It just made me think about the things I do and why I do them.
  • In "Stakes is High" by De La Soul the beat stood out to me and I think I recognized it from something else.
  • Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre's "Nuthin' but a G Thang" was much more smooth which I enjoyed a lot more, so considering the songs I have heard from East Coast vs. West Coast I would rather listen to the rap from the West Coast.
  • Public Enemy's "Fight The Power" sends out a good message, they were calling upon all of the people of the black community who were constantly being mistreated to stand up and "fight the power" as one and join together against authority to get rights and everything they deserve.
  • I watched the movie Nerve earlier this year and the main character at one point says "dolla dolla bill y'all" and I never knew where It was from but now I do.
  • I really liked U.N.I.T.Y. by Queen Latifah because she was speaking out about how men mistreat women calling women a bitch or a hoe which I could relate to because today these terms are thrown around so much people don't realize exactly what they are saying when they use them.
  • Hearing LL Cool J rap was interesting because he is a main character in the show NCIS LA which I used to watch a lot.
  • Same Love Is one of my favorite songs, I remember playing it so many times a few years ago at thanksgiving. I just love the way it talks about homophobia and the problems homophobic people are facing. I know people who are gay and they are some of the nicest people, but I know the difficulties they face each and everyday from friends, classmates, and society. This song is something these people can turn to for comfort. The message is that it doesn't matter who you love because underneath everything all of the love is the same.
