13 Ways of Looking at a Basketball -Jackson Tuma

13 Ways of Looking at a Basketball
Jackson Tuma

I
Among the empty gym,
The only object moving
Is the lines on the basketball

II
The same empty gym,
The only sound, the ball,
Against the wooden court

III
A basketball,
Worn,
Torn,
Alone on a concrete court

IV
Bouncing side to side
Fooling the defender
Till it's in the basket

V
In the garage,
Next to the car
Stood the basketball,
Still as a stone

VI
A basketball,
Whistling through the air
Making the net sing

VII
Cocky men,
Backing their talk
Using only the basketball

VIII
The ball rotating,
Rotating,
Rotating,
Till it is meet by the strong hands of the player

IX
The joy of a kid,
With a new ball
New dream

X
The basketball
Giving kids
Hopes
Dreams
Opportunities

XI
A man in his car
Looking out his window
Watching kids playing with the basketball
Remembering his childhood
Making him smile

XII
A simple game
Worth more to the kids
And the ones who consider it a lifestyle

XIII
Kids playing
Laughing
Smiling
Having fun
Making memories

  1. I like this poem because it is all of the ways a simple basketball can affect people. Whether it is a team in a gym, kids playing for fun, or people playing it as a lifestyle.
